The present good governance government completes its first year in office today. The government was formed on 17th of August last year based on the result of the general election. 6,151 candidates competed for 225 seats in the parliament at the election.
The first anniversary celebrations of the good governance national government will be held at Matara Sanath Jayasuriya grounds today at 3.00 p.m. President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe will chair the event. It will be comprised of a colorful display what the national government has achieved for the country and the people.
MPs and Ministers of all parties have been invited to attend the function.
The National government represented 35 registered political parties and 201 independent groups. The United National Front received nearly six million votes and gained 93 parliamentary seats. The total figure stood at 106 with the bonus seats received from the national list. The United National Front was able to win 11 districts. The United People’s Freedom Alliance was only able to receive nearly five million votes and they secured only 83 parliamentary seats.
