Police personnel attached to the Terrorist Investigations Division (TID) have arrested six individuals along with 200 fake passports in Colombo yesterday.
The police said that a team of TID officials have done this raid following a tip off and they have seized computers, printers and duplicate franks the suspects used to produce fake passports. According to the police they have seized this haul of passports during the raids carried out in Maligawatte, Aluthkade and Maradanaareas.
Investigations revealed that the racketeers had planned to send a batch of Sri Lankans illegally to Canada using the fake passports.
The racketeers had obtained Rs. 150,000 from an individual to issue a fake passport and visa.
The suspects had been engaged in the racket for a long period until it came to light yesterday.
The raid was carried out under the direct supervision of IGP Pujith Jayasundara and on the direction of TID Director SSP Nalaka de Silva.
The suspects are due to be produced in courts and police advises the public to be vigilant on this type of racketeers.
