Vehicle speeds within the city of Colombo will fall to 6 kilometres per hour (KMPH) by 2020, according to the Ministry of Finance.
Currently, the speed within Colombo city is 8 KMPH, the Ministry added.
In 1980 the speed was between 40 to 60 KMPH.
The drop in speed is due to the increase in the number of vehicles on the roads. The overall number of vehicles in 2008 stood at 3,390,993 but by last year it had risen to 6,302,141.
The Ministry of Finance said that about 250,000 vehicles enter the city of Colombo daily and this figure would increase by twenty five thousand annually.
According to the Ministry of Finance, a plan has been drawn up to identify seven main entrances through which vehicles enter the Colombo City and as a solution to traffic congestion, a light rail service would be launched very soon from those places.
The Ministry said that this light rail service will be launched covering the towns of Borella, Kottawa, Battaramulla, Kaduwela, Maradana, Mattakkuliya, Peliyagoda, Dematagoda, Kadawatha, Wellampitiya and Kirulapone.
