The Home Affairs Ministry confirmed that the government will not declare December 30 as a national day of mourning for former Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake.
The government earlier declared December 31 as a National Day of Mourning but later changed the date to December 30. Reportedly the government has decided to suspend the National Day of Mourning on a request from the family.
The 83-year-old former Premier passed away on Tuesday at a private hospital after suffering from a brief illness.
The remains of the late leader was brought to the parliament today for parliamentarians to pay their last respects. Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, former president MP Mahinda Rajapaksa, Opposition Leader R. Sampanthan and other MPs paid their last respects at the parliamentary complex this morning.
The funeral will be held on 31 December with full state honors in his home town of Horana.
