20% Power Drop Likely

The Ministry of Power and Energy predicted a possible 20 per cent drop in energy generated over the next few months because of the persisting drought especially in catchment areas in the country.

Media Spokesman for the Ministry Sulakshana Jayawardena said water levels in several reservoirs had dropped excessively last month with the Victoria reservoir dropping 26 per cent and Rantambe reservoir by 24 per cent.

He added that the Samanalawewa reservoir level also dropped 29 per cent with Udawalawe seeing a drop of 33 per cent in addition to Laxapana and several other adjacent reservoirs also falling considerably.

He added however, that there was no immediate danger of a power outages anywhere because there’s been a shift from hydro to coal power energy production.
