Police Headquarters on Monday issued an interim traffic plan for the environs of the Katunayake area following the government’s decision to implement a staggered temporary shutdown of the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) to facilitate overlaying of the runway.
The BIA will be closed for airport operations for eight hours daily from 08:30 a.m. to 04:30 p.m. from 6 January to 6 April.
The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation said the Rs 7.2 billion overlay is intended to improve surface conditions and traction for safer landings. This is the first overlay since the commissioning of the runway in 1986.
Police Headquarters said the traffic plan will be implemented in the immediate and outer perimeters of Katunayake between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. daily, effective 2 January to 6 April.
The traffic plan will be implemented in 4 stages.
Police Headquarters said separate instructions have been issued for vehicles plying the Expressway and those plying the Colombo-Chilaw route.
A special traffic plan will be enforced for vehicles travelling towards Minuwangoda while vehicles entering the Katunayake Free Trade Zone region and exiting the Free Trade Zone will also have to comply with the new instructions for the next three months
