Earth’s closest planetary neighbour, Venus, reached its closest point to planet Earth, yesterday (12).
The planet, which is almost the same size as Earth, appeared alongside the moon, looking like a bright star next to the lunar satellite. Sri Lanka was treated to a rare view of planet Venus.
The Sri Lanka Planetarium said the angle between the Sun and Venus turned to a maximum of 47 degrees, resulting in Venus looking brighter than usual.
Sri Lankans were able to witness planet Venus, brighter than usual, from 6.30p.m. to 9p.m. yesterday.
Furthermore, the Planetarium also noted that the planet Mercury, the closest planet to the Sun, will reach the highest peak above the horizon next Thursday (19). Mercury will be observed low in the eastern sky just before the sunrise.
