The National Drug Regulatory Board has initiated a program to reduce the prices of contact lenses and the prices will be reduced by Rs.20,000 from next week, the Government Information Department said.
According to the Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne a contact lens imported from India for Rs. 6,000 is sold in Sri Lanka at a price of Rs. 25,000 – Rs. 30,000. He said that there is an eye lens racket in Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile, a program to provide eye lenses free of charge to the patients undergoing eye surgeries at government hospitals is also being implemented.
The Health Ministry under the directions of Health Minister has also taken steps to import 100,000 eye lenses. Under this program, the Minister has also taken steps to provide financial grants to the directors of Hospitals to buy eye lenses locally if any shortage is occurred. The Ministry has also issued the circular in this regard.
