A two-day Dengue Eradication Programme organized by the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medicine and Dengue Eradication Unit will be launched in 12 districts of the country from May 18 -19, the Ministry announced.
The Health Ministry Issuing a statement said 1,800 teams will be deployed for the task.
According to the Epidemiology Unit of the Health Ministry, since January this year, 44,623 suspected dengue cases have been reported from all over the island. Over 41% of the cases were reported from the Western Province which includes Colombo, Kalutara and Gampaha districts.
The Health Ministry said the program is carried out to control the spread of the mosquito-borne disease as well as to strengthen treatment.
Organization problems in waste management, changes and complications in the dengue virus have caused the rapid spread of the disease, the Health Ministry says.
The Epidemiology Unit says this situation warrants regular removal of possible mosquito breeding sites from the environment.
The Ministry advises people to immediately consult a qualified medical practitioner and seek medical attention in the event of fever by day three of the illness.
