NIR Ministry spends frugally


At a moment when a series of events threaten the reconciliation and ethnic harmony of the country, it has been revealed that the Ministry of National Integration and Reconciliation (NIR) has only spent 13.4% of their capital budgetary target for the first quarter of 2017, the Finance Ministry’s report, on the actual expenditure at the end of the first quarter of 2017, states.

What is remarkable is that the Rs 8 million spent as capital expenses amounts to 0.4% of the total capital allocation for 2017. The Ministry has a sum of Rs 1,918 million capital allocation and Rs 113.4 million recurrent expenditure allocations for 2017.

It is through capital expenditure that the ministry can carry out initiatives to promote national integration and reconciliation.

In the first quarter of 2017 the Ministry has spent 30.1% of their budgetary allocation for the first quarter of 2017. The expenditure target for the first quarter was Rs 88.4 million; however the ministry has spent only Rs 26.6 million.

Moreover this is only 1.3 % against the total allocation for 2017. Meanwhile the Ministry of National Co Existence, Dialogue and Official languages has only spent 19.3% of their capital budgetary target for the first quarter of 2017. Overall, when capital and recurrent expenses are added, it has spent 66% of their budgetary target for the first quarter of 2017.

The expenditure target for the first quarter was Rs 199.8 million; however the ministry has spent only Rs 131.8 million. Moreover this is only 12.9% against the total allocation for 2017.
