The Health Ministry yesterday announced a two-week mosquito control program. It said the number of dengue cases had topped 70,000 by the end of the last week of June.
Ministry Spokesman, Nipun Ekanayake said 25 per cent of those suffering from dengue were below 19 years of age. The number of dengue deaths had exceeded 200 within the same period, he said. The total number of dengue patients recorded last year had been a little over 55,000 and the death toll 78, he added.
Ekanayake said the Ministry’s mosquito control programme commence today (28) with the help of other ministries, provincial councils and the armed forces.
Several hundred members of the Civil Defence Department had been deployed to assist the Negombo District General Hospital, Colombo North and Colombo South Teaching Hospitals, Ratnapura General Hospital, Gampaha District General Hospital, Kandana, Dankotuwa, Talangama, Piliyandala and Wetara Peripheral Hospitals and, the Homagama Base Hospital in providing health care services to dengue patients, Ekanayake said.
