Police today said the investigations into the recent shooting carried out targeting the Chief Executive Officer of South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) Dr. Sameera Senaratne have revealed that the shooting was staged.
The shooting was staged to falsely portray a death threat to Dr. Senaratne’s life, the police alleged.
Dr. Senaratne claimed that two armed men on a motorbike wearing full-face helmets shot at him when he was leaving the SAITM campus in Malabe in his car. He had escaped the shooting unhurt.
According to the police, investigations have revealed that a former Pradeshiya Sabha member, who is a close friend of Dr. Senaratne has orchestrated the shooting along with a driver of a local government institution. The police are on the lookout to apprehend the duo who have fled the area and are hiding.
Meanwhile, the Colombo Organized Crimes Prevention Division had launched an investigation into the incident and arrested a resident of Embilipitiya in connection to the incident along with a 9mm Browning handgun and two bullets, a 3.8mm revolver with three bullets and a motorcycle believed to have been used to carry out the shooting.
The suspect was produced before the Kaduwela Magistrate Court yesterday and was remanded till March 13.
Police have also questioned a former STF soldier, who is suspected to be connected to the incident and is currently in remand custody on unrelated charges
Dr. Sameera Senaratne was also questioned at length regarding the incident on Monday, Police said.
The Colombo Organized Crime Prevention Division and the Nugegoda Special Crimes Investigation Division are investigating the incident.
