The SLFP has decided to desist from using polythene and other non-degradable items for decorations at the party May Day Rally to be held in Kandy next month.
UPFA General Secretary Minister Mahinda Amaraweera disclosed this when he called on the Malwatte and Asgiriya Prelates at their respective temples in Kandy and received their blessings yesterday. Amaraweera said President Maithripala Sirisena in his capacity as party chairman has given specific instructions that the May Day Rally should be held to ensure and safeguard the historic value of the Kandy city.
It is the first time that the SLFP is going to hold a May Day rally in Kandy this year encompassing the whole island, he said.
Amaraweera said the party has also decided that it should not put up decorations at electorate level too using polythene and non-degradable items. Minister Amaraweera said attention had also been drawn towards discouraging the use of liquor by the participants this year by creating awareness at electorate level.
