Minister of Public Transport and Civil Aviation, Nimal Siripala De Silva stated that the regulation of the transport sector has become a pressing issue in the country.
De Silva added that the question of whether or not the problem can be solved using morality, law or good governance (Yahapalanaya) has been raised, during a press conference held in Battaramulla, discussing the strengthening and regulation of the transport sector of Sri Lanka, earlier today (12).
He further stated that unfriendly competition has been brewing between members of the transport sector and owners of private buses.
Furthermore, De Silva stated that around 2095 sacks of bus permits have been handed over to the FCID for investigation, due to discrepancies that had come up.
De Silva concluded his statements by stating that just because of the ‘Yahapalanaya’ method of governance that was adopted; it does not mean that bus permits will be handed out generously, and that the permit should be obtained via a tender.
