SP Shriyantha Peiris had convened the meeting following various allegations against the private tuition centres in Kandy and its outskirts.
Prof. Herath, addressing the meeting at the Kandy police headquarters, said that the teachers of private tuition centres should be held responsible for the deterioration of discipline among students.
The teachers should set an example to their students and advise and guide them on the correct path, Prof. Herath said, adding that there were complaints against private tuition school teachers for molesting female students attending their classes.
Parents had to keep a watchful eye on their children, he said.
Inquiries into complaints of the abuse of schoolchildren had revealed that a driver of a school van service had sexually abused many children, Prof. Herath said.
SP Peiris told the meeting that police had received numerous complaints from parents about instances of molesting their daughters in Kandy.
Young boys and girls left their homes saying they were going to tuition classes but they went elsewhere, he said.
