School facing landslides to be relocated – Amunugama

Minister Sarath Amunugama has said that the Maputugala Maha Vidyalaya will be shifted if the landslide threat to the Habaragala mountain in Ingiriya persists.

The minister has said the Department of Geology and Technology were directed to conduct a research within one week and submit a report.

Amunugama said so during a tour of the area affected by several minor landslides recently.

The school authorities have appointed a committee of ten parents to look for any changes that occur in the mountain. They complain that no action has been taken to plant tress or dig drains along the mountain slope.

The 110-year-old school is spread over a land area of three hectares. It has 825 students and 43 teachers.
