Programme to tame wild elephants

The President of the Basnayake Nilames Association, Basnayaka Nilame of the Kataragama Devalaya Gemunu Walisundara stated that a programme must be implemented to tame wild female elephants domestically, in order to take control of the rapidly increasing elephant population.

He explained that although there was in fact a shortage of tame elephants and tuskers, there was still a large overall population of elephants on the island.

Meanwhile, Basnayake Nilame of the Ruhunu-Kataragama Maha Devalaya, D. P. Kumarage revealed to Ada Derana that problems had arisen over the involvement of elephants in four specific processions, including the upcoming annual procession of the Kataragama Maha Devala.
