The Government has made the decision to conduct the provincial elections under the new election system.
Reports indicate that the decision was made unanimously by both the United National Party (UNP) and Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) who together represent the governing party of the country.
The two parties had arrived at said agreement on the impending provincial elections when the representatives convened at the President’s official residence yesterday (19) night.
Senior ministers of both the UNP and the SLFP including Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe were present at this meeting which was led by President Maithripala Sirisena.
The meeting had drawn attention towards the immediate conduction of provincial elections.
Government sources revealed that the gathering had also addressed the new constitutional amendment, where a suggestion had been made to hold discussions with other parties and arrive at a final decision about the constitution without further delay.
Additionally, the two parties had discussed the question of power distribution, sources confirmed.
